A Busy Year for the Thursday Afternoon Painting and Drawing Group

It has been a very busy and productive year for the Thursday Afternoon Painting and Drawing Group led by their leader Lesley Sherry, which has involved a 'Watercolour Master Class,' talks from visiting experts and a very successful Art Exhibition of the members own 'oeuvres'.

In October a visiting expert, Sue Chatterton, came to the Victoria Centre to conduct a masterclass in painting with water colours whilst in November the members of the group enjoyed a talk, with, slides, on the Pre-Raphaelite Movement. This was presented by one of the guides at Manchester Museum of Art, Isobel Killicoat,

A local artist, Glynis Davies visited the group in January to give a talk, accompanied by slides, on the work of J.M.W. Turner and in February a new class to be held monthly in the Kingsfield Centre, 'Art Appreciation', was set up by Zena Thewlis. Here u3a members can enjoy illustrated talks on artists and art movements.

The successful Art Exhibition was held, in the Victoria Centre from May 5th. until the 31st. and the exhibits were of such a high standard that several of the paintings were bought by the general public

From June 28th. some members of this group are also entering paintings for the 'Biddulph Festival Open Art Exhibition', again held in the Victoria Centre, which is open to all local artists over the age of 16.

One of the group's leaders, Lesley Sherry commented,' I have been a member of the group for around 10 years and one of it's two leaders since September 2016. It is very much a 'self-help' group where everyone is very supportive of each other and we all learn new skills. There is a great feeling of companionship within this group.'

Member Judith Shields remarked,' This is a very practical group where we all help one another. It is a meeting of like -minded people which results in a fabulous social group.'

Beyond creativity the group also offers a wonderful opportunity to socialise and build connections
