Cribbage

Cribbage is played with 2, 3 or 4 players using a standard 52 card deck and a cribbage board.

Phase 1: The Play (Pegging)

Players alternate playing cards face up, starting with the non-dealer, and keep a running total of the pip values.

Card Values: Aces count as 1, numbered cards (2-10) count as their face value, and face cards (J, Q, K) count as 10

The 31 limit: The running total cannot exceed 31.

Scoring during play:

Reaching exactly 15 or 31 = 2 points

Pairs (playing a card matching the previous card) = 2 points

3 of a kind = 6

4 of a kind = 12

Runs: 3 or more cards in sequence (not necessarily in order) = 1 point

Go: If a player cannot play without going over 31, they say, “Go” and the opponent gets 1 point. The last player to play cards in the sequence gets 1 point (or 2 if they hit 31 exactly).

Phase 2: The Show (Counting Hands)

After all cards are played, players count and score the combination in their 4 card hands, using the starter card as their 5th card. The non-dealer counts first, followed by the dealer’s hand, and finally, the dealer counts the crib.

15s: Any combination of cards totalling 15 = 2 points.

Pairs: 2 points per pair.

Runs: 1 point per card in a sequence.

Flush: 4 cards of the same suit in a hand = 4 points ( 5 if the starter card also matches). Note: Flushes do not apply to the crib unless all 5 cards match.

Nobs: Holding a Jack in your hand of the same suit as the starter card = 1 point (“One for his nob”)
